WHY ARE SYMBOLS IMPORTANT?
Symbols are one of the most important keys to understanding works of art. Throughout the history of art, artists have used animals, plants, objects, colors, gestures, and mythological or religious figures to communicate ideas that go far beyond what is immediately visible. For centuries, viewers were familiar with this visual language and could easily recognize the deeper meanings hidden within a painting or sculpture. Today, however, many of these meanings are no longer obvious, causing us to miss important layers of interpretation.
By learning the symbolism of art, we gain access to a richer and more profound understanding of artistic masterpieces. Symbols reveal the beliefs, values, emotions, and cultural ideas of past societies, helping us see works of art through the eyes of their original audiences. In this video series, each symbol is explored individually, allowing you to gradually build your visual vocabulary and discover the fascinating hidden messages that artists have embedded in their works for centuries.
