ACCESSIBILITY STATEMENT
Our Commitment
The History of Art Academy is committed to creating an inclusive, welcoming and respectful learning environment in which participants can engage with art, architecture and cultural heritage with confidence and enjoyment.
We believe that the study of art should be as accessible as reasonably possible and strive to ensure that our educational programmes and digital services are designed with inclusivity in mind.
Accessibility is an ongoing commitment. As the Academy develops, we will continue to review and improve both our Website and our educational programmes wherever reasonably practicable.
Website Accessibility
The Academy is committed to providing a Website that is accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of technology or ability.
When designing and maintaining our Website, we seek to follow recognised accessibility principles and established best practices, including, where appropriate, the internationally recognised Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
Where reasonably practicable, the Academy aims to provide:
- clear and consistent navigation;
- logical page structure;
- readable typography;
- sufficient colour contrast;
- meaningful headings;
- descriptive alternative text for images where appropriate;
- keyboard accessibility for essential functions;
- compatibility with modern browsers and assistive technologies.
We recognise that accessibility is an evolving process and are committed to continual improvement.
Educational Programmes
The Academy offers educational programmes in a wide variety of locations, including:
- museums;
- galleries;
- churches;
- historic houses;
- libraries;
- auction houses;
- cafés;
- hotels;
- public spaces; and
- other culturally significant venues.
Each Course is designed to provide an engaging and intellectually rewarding learning experience while respecting the individual characteristics of each location.
Historic Buildings and Cultural Venues
Many Courses take place within historic buildings that were constructed long before modern accessibility standards were introduced.
As a result, some venues may present physical limitations, including:
- steps;
- staircases;
- uneven flooring;
- cobbled streets;
- narrow passageways;
- limited lift access;
- restricted wheelchair access;
- limited seating.
These characteristics are often an inherent part of the historic environment and lie outside the Academy's control.
The Academy cannot alter the architectural features or visitor regulations of independently operated museums, galleries or historic sites.
Walking Courses
Some Courses include educational walks between museums, galleries or other venues as an integral part of the learning experience.
Walking distances, terrain and the duration of standing may vary depending on the subject matter and location.
Participants are encouraged to review the Course description carefully before booking and to contact the Academy if they have any questions regarding mobility or accessibility.
Individual Support
The Academy warmly welcomes enquiries from participants who have accessibility requirements or who would like additional information before booking.
Where reasonably practicable, we will endeavour to:
- provide further information regarding Course venues;
- discuss walking distances and physical requirements;
- advise on accessibility features known to us;
- identify seating opportunities where available;
- make reasonable adjustments within the Academy's control;
- coordinate, where appropriate, with participating venues.
While every effort will be made to assist participants, certain adjustments may not be possible due to the historic nature of individual buildings or the operational policies of independent venues.
Digital Accessibility
The Academy is committed to ensuring that digital content remains clear, accessible and easy to navigate.
We regularly review our Website and welcome suggestions that may help us improve accessibility for all visitors.
Should you experience difficulty accessing any part of our Website, we encourage you to contact us so that we may provide the information in an alternative format where reasonably possible.
Feedback
Accessibility is an ongoing process of learning and improvement.
The Academy welcomes constructive feedback regarding both its Website and its educational programmes.
Comments and suggestions help us identify opportunities to improve accessibility and ensure that our educational activities remain welcoming to the widest possible audience.
Contact
If you have questions regarding accessibility, require additional information before booking, or wish to discuss your individual requirements, please contact the Academy using the contact information published on our Website.
The Academy will always endeavour to respond thoughtfully and promptly.
